Who needs a New York Boating License?
All recreational boaters in New York need to take a boating safety course and obtain a boating license before operating a motorized vessel. Remember, you must be at least 10 years old to operate a motorized recreational vessel in New York State, and at least 14 years old to operate a personal watercraft (PWC).
A new law about boater education and boating certification in New York was passed in 2020, and it is being phased in gradually by age. The process will be fully implemented by 2025. All motorized boat operators must be certified by 2025.
Remember, boaters in New York must always carry their license with them on their boat.
Exceptions:
You do not need a New York Boating License if:
- You are licensed to operate a commercial vessel in the U.S. or Canada
- You are a certified boating instructor
- You are a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary or US Power Squadron
- You are a first responder who is operating a vessel in the course of your duties
